After the trip is over and you’re finally safe from the mosquitos Scred will work out all the complex shared expenses between participants back and forth and will tell you exactly what each person owes, and who is expecting money. All you need to do is to lie back and relax.

Navigation Vertical

Publié par guilmain sur mai 29, 2008

Definition of objectif

The user needs to navigate through a site to locate information and features and have a clear view of their current position in the site. The navigation can have few or a lot of categories.
Why use more than 1 level of navigation

navigation-horizontale

The question here is not if the navigation has to been horizontal or vertical. The tabular metaphor is well-known in user interface and facilitates easy navigation between groups of information. By showing the current position in the two topmost levels the users know where they are and can also jump to other categories.

Use When

  • Tabs provide context. They offer the ability to give visual indication of a user’s location within a body of information.
  • Tabs provide navigation. They provide the ability to navigate the site.
  • The number of elements in the toplevel and in the second level each are less than 10.
  • The category titles are relatively short.
  • Users want to see where they are now.
  • You need to indicate the user’s current location in the set of available options.
  • Users want to know how to get back to the main page

Solution

  • Present a single-line row of tabs in a horizontal bar under the site branding and header.
  • The first tab in the top-level is reserved for the home page if there is not any other “Home” destination.
  • When the list of categories becomes too long, consider using a vertical navigation.
  • The selected tab should come forward in terms of prominence from the other tabs. Unselected tabs should sit back visually to reinforce the notion of where the user is via the selected tab.
  • The page that is delivered by selection of the tab should be visually connected to the tab via design cues: color, brackets, borders etc. Selection of another tab redraws the entire page and presents the new information tied to the new selection.
  • Never stack multiple rows of tabs as this leads to confusion about the selected layer versus inactive layer.
  • The topmost tabular is always visible while the other tabular changes depending on the current top-level selection.

SEO - Optimize your page - on page - The main content

Publié par guilmain sur mai 20, 2008

How to create a good content (text)

So after having a good title on your page you have to create a related content on the page.

Here are the main rules :

  • Gold rule : you need page with CONTENT
Seems logical but it’s the base, you have to have the same words in the content than in your title, put those words also in your content heading

  • Only visible text, finish to hidden content like “sex” to have more visit, isn’t working anymore
  • Bold, Title (H1,2…), link,… give info to Google what is important for you
  • All pages must be linked
  • I will point this later on, but inside links are VERY important

  • The name of the links avoid « more info » « more » (anchor text)
  • Occurrence : Repeat yourself on the same page (3-4 times the key word)
  • One language
  • Use : female, male, singular, plural
  • Synonimes
This one seems logical but it’s one of the most important, try to use all the possibles words surfers can use to find your page. A very good tools : Google trends

Here are the others rules :

  • Localization of the text top > bottom in weight
  • Size of the page (100 words minimum but 1 theme)
  • Ratio of density 3-5 % = number of keywords/total of the words on the page
  • Proximity of the words between them
  • Order of the word (“travel to marocco” and “marocco travel”)

Don’t forget to be technically correct

  • Use html balise
  • Use CSS
  • Try to be W3C correct, you can check your page directly on

My tips

  • use Google Trends to select which word/synomim you use
  • use firefox addons to make your live easier
  • for the link “more info” if you use an image and you have not other choice one solution is to use the alternate text of the image to give the information needed to the Search Engines

Gmail a free harddrive online

Publié par guilmain sur mai 19, 2008

If you use Gmail (free webmail), you have 6 Gig of space, seems a lot for e-mail but now you can turn it into a FREE virtual harddrive :-)

GMail Drive is a Shell Namespace Extension that creates a virtual filesystem around your Google Mail account, allowing you to use Gmail as a storage medium.

GMail Drive creates a virtual filesystem on top of your Google Gmail account and enables you to save and retrieve files stored on your Gmail account directly from inside Windows Explorer. GMail Drive literally adds a new drive to your computer under the My Computer folder, where you can create new folders, copy and drag’n'drop files to.

You can also use gdisk

SEO - Optimize your page - on page - The Title

Publié par guilmain sur mai 13, 2008

On page criterium : The Title

If you have to do 1 optimization THEN IS THE TITLE

It’s you BRAND IMAGE
Heading title on the page SEO version

It’s what you see en top of the page, on google result and when save a bookmark

That’s what make the surfer « clic »

Title result on Google research

How to improve it:

-Between 6 to 7 description words without stop words
-Every page has its own title
-Avoid generic terms like « Welcome on our website »
-Title has to give as much « keyword » as possible
-Title is the resume of the page
-One langue in the title
-Title must be more and more clear and describe the structure of the page
-It has to be a sentence  to give people to need to clic

My tips

- Well, The most important thing is to try to have something like a sentence but a list of the most keywords linked to the page content.
For an home page if you take my example “Siemens électroménager” (home appliances) when I took the main product families to start, then the main big services

- Make a title per page, no copy paste here.
